Biodiversity
By 2025 all habitats of all species currently on the near to extinct or endangered lists (WWF, IUCN, Greenpeace lists etc) should be protected with accompanying measures so that local populations become guardians of the endangered species and their habitats. Promote ecotourism;
By 2025 all “exotic” shrubs and plants that are evergreens and were imported over the years and planted in gardens to create a “green screen” are to be removed from gardens and replaced by local cultures of shrubs that allow life in and below it in equilibrium. (most imported evergreens like conifers are “dead zones” for local life systems). Support by governments is needed;
These days a large portion of the gardens around houses very often consist of monotone culture lawns that can’t withstand the new heat of climate change in summer and thus require extensive watering creating an undue burden on our water resources. By 2025, 50% of all “lawns” around houses are to be converted to a mixture of different grasses that better sustain heat and don’t need watering. Different grasses are mixed with a pallet of ”wild flowers” that support the bees and increase diversity in the garden (a pallet of grasses, herbs and flowers). Projects to be launched with support of (local) governments en local environmental groups;
The railway systems of many countries have some to tens of sq km of verges along the tracks. These verges are often neglected. A big campaign by the entity responsible for the railroad infrastructure should lead to combating invasive species and massive sowing of wild flower beds mixed with local grasses. This will lead to multiple corridors country wide through which insects and other species can migrate. A bonus would be the nice view commuters have to and from their work;
All derelict areas in ownership of local, regional, state or federal entities should be seeded with mixtures of grasses that thrive in the local climate conditions mixed with wild flowers. Maintenance of all these areas by pensioners during their one day/week service to the community for the footprinting generated over the years.
